Welcome to the Wellington Animal Hospital Group (WAHG) website. We are committed to the health and well-being of all our animal patients!
Our first branch, and current head office, Wellington Animal Hospital was established in 1967. The practice has grown from a small start up to the second largest group of Veterinarians in the Western Cape. The practice has a proud history of outstanding and highly professional service combined with a distinctly rural friendliness, creating the platform on which our love and passion for pets, horses and production animals is built. Each person involved in the practice, whether a vet, nurse, receptionist, administrative officer or general worker has a great common denominator and that is our love and passion for our patients and clients.
Our WAHG group consists of 4 branches, one in Wellington (Wellington Animal Hospital), two in Paarl (Boulevard Animal Hospital and WAHG Pet Wellness) and one in Franschhoek (Franschhoek Animal Clinic) as well as 2 WAHG Vetshops, one in Wellington (WAHG Wellington Vetshop) and the other one in Paarl (WAHG Boulevard Vetshop).
We offer a wide range of veterinary services: besides the exceptional pet skills, we offer specialised services for horses, exotic animals and wildlife. Herd health and management is not neglected and we provide a very important service in the food chain of South Africa involving the design and set up of health programs, fertility management, general healing and nutrition of our production animals.
Services
Your pet’s general health and quality of life are our main concerns. We offer comprehensive preventative care as well as curative treatment for your sick pet.
When presented with a sick animal, obtaining the correct diagnosis promptly and accurately is crucial for effective treatment and thus wellbeing of your pet.
We have an in-house laboratory, modern radiographic equipment, ultrasound sonar scanning and endoscopy available. This means that we have ready access to important laboratory tests that can be an important aid in making a prompt and accurate diagnosis in the optimal treatment of your pet.
Our branches in Wellington and Paarl also offer in-patient facilities where your pet can be hospitalized for more intensive treatment, if necessary.

The Wellington Animal Hospital Group provides a wide range of surgical procedures.
Our preventative surgery entails population and disease control through surgical sterilisation of all companion animals – ranging from cats and dogs to exotic pets such as rodents, primates, reptiles and birds.
Other preventative and diagnostic procedures like dental scaling, ear flushing, eye tests, etc. are done on all week days.
We also provide surgical management of wounds, injuries, infections and tumours as part of a treatment strategy. Orthopaedic cases including bone fractures and ligament injuries are commonly seen and surgical correction performed in-house.
In the case of orthopaedic or spinal conditions and injuries beyond the scope of general practice, we assist in the referral process to dedicated surgical specialists.
Our sedation and anaesthetic protocols are selected to provide the care, calming, monitoring as well as the speed and ease in recovery required for your pet’s safety and your own peace of mind. Pre- and post-operative pain management is of paramount importance to us and every possible step is taken to provide your pet with the best possible experience while at the hospital and during the recovery period thereafter.

WAHG’s dedicated, specialist equine vets are available for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This ensures timeous and efficient treatment of all patients.
We offer a specialised breeding service. This includes all steps from ultrasound to artificial insemination of mares to ensure optimal pregnancy rates. Embryo extraction and transplant procedures have already been very succesfully performed and more of these procedures are planned for the future.
We have a fully equipped equine theatre where specialised surgical procedures are performed. We also offer arthroscopical procedures and make use of specialist surgeons for complicated cases.
Our portable digital x-ray and ultrasound equipment ensures quick and accurate diagnoses in the patient’s own home environment. This ensures a much calmer patient.
Our equine vets offer a lot of their private time over weekends to offer veterinary support at various equine sport disciplines in order to ensure the well-being of these horses.

Our farm animal vets bring to our clients the best clinical and advisory expertise. This includes the diagnosing and treatment of diseases as well as surgery in our fully equipped large animal theatre. The hospital also has the necessary facilities to house these animals during recovery after treatment or surgery.
Preventative medicine is a very important part of our service to our clients. This includes creating health and production management plans according to every client’s unique needs.

Dr. Egbert Compion has a particular interest in the more exotic species including birds, small mammals, spiders, reptiles and fish. He has been involved with and interested in their capture, husbandry and breeding over the past thirty years.
Our clinic will gladly assist in and advise on your ‘alternative’ pet’s needs and offer radiology, ultrasound scanning, bacterial and fungal culture and antibiograms and a range of diagnostic blood tests to get to a conclusive diagnosis. We offer a range of surgical and medical treatment options, both curative and preventative.
